The choice of a profession
The choice of a profession is not an easy task. Every young man has to face this question at sometime in his life. What profession is to be chosen? Various professions require various qualities, qualifications, skills and experience. Unless a man possesses the required qualifications for a profession it would be worse then useless for him to enter that field. Most of the educated young men find it difficult to choose a suitable profession by which they can earn a decent living. They are more attracted by lucrative professions, without thinking whether the job would suit them or not. This always leads to failure. Because of this sometimes they lose their and give up their efforts.
We take the example of an advocate. He should have great argumentative skills. He must also have courage, self-confidence and industry. A shopkeeper must be very active, tactful, wide awake, have strong commonsense and good and quick calculations. A doctor must possess presence of mind, practical skills and great sympathy. A teacher, of course, should have brain and patience. But he should on no account show any weakness for filthy lucre. A government official must be obedient and regular like a machine.A man of shy and retiring disposition can never be successful in a business in which energy is required, and a man of restless disposition will not succeed in an occupation in which patience and close study are required. A person should choose the profession field according to his own temperament. Sometimes the choice becomes really difficult because young men attach some imaginary dignity to certain profession. They forget that all profession fields are noble. They do not like manual labour. Government service has great attraction of them as they are of the view that it carries certain dignity and prestige along with it. The struggle is great that graduates are forced to undertake any kind of work, which comes hardly, without have any time to consider whether they are fit for it or not. This results in chaos everywhere. There are teachers who ought to be contractors and the lawyers who ought to be traders. People are unhappy. This is just because of choosing a wrong professional field. The job that is not according to one’s temperament and capabilities. This creates dissatisfaction. The great fault of parents is that, unless a child qualifies for an overseer ship, or becomes a doctor, he is considered worthless. If he can become a musician, a gymnast, a sailor or a soldier, why not to train him for the field for which he is fit? It is important to understand that a person can only excel in the profession which suits his abilities the best.
